And there she was, resting her body in the huge tree where they met years ago; the only living being in earth that could actually tell their story. There she was; missing him every second that passed by, wishing she could do something else than wait for him.
A warm tear went down Hyukjae’s cheeks, she was sad and desperate.
How will he be? She asked herself while looking at the place they once went.
Will you remember me Kyu?
Will you recognize me this time?
Will you know I’ve been waiting for you all this while?
Hyukjae smiled bitterly. She has been waiting for Kyuhyun to come back to her again, Hyukjae was tired of being like that; she felt like if being a monster, a monster that would always bring sadness to Kyuhyun’s life; Hyukjae cursed herself because of being like that.
“You and I are the same.” Hyukjae said almost in a whisper. “You are exactly as I remember you that first time we met.”
Why are you talking to the tree?
“And I’m exactly as I was back then…” Hyukjae said looking at the horizon.
Do you think you will get some comfort from it?
“How old are you?” Hyukjae asked to that tree that was silently supporting her. She chuckled bitterly. “Are you as old as I am?” She asked with warm tears running down her cheeks. “You were already this old when I first met you?” She asked feeling her heart clenching. “I know you’re older than me…” She said in a whisper, a bitter smile crossed her beautiful face. “You have seen my entire life passing by right?” Hyukjae couldn’t hold herself from sobbing. “I miss you so much Kyuhyun…” She admitted finally closing her eyes and crying her heart out; just like always.
Hyukjae stood up, silently saying goodbye to that place that nobody has ever dared to enter; that place that was their place and nobody else’s. To that tree that watched them meet, fall in love and part away several times. That tree was the only thing Hyukjae had to lean on when she was feeling depressed, she missed him so much and she could do nothing else than wait.
But I’ll do it Kyuhyun…
I’ll wait my entire life just for you.
Her legs took her to that place once again; and there he was; Kyuhyun was eating lunch with his family, he had a beautiful wife and two cute kids already; he seemed happy and Hyukjae knew she lost him right away; she wouldn’t ever destroy Kyuhyun’s happy life.
His smile is so pure…
His life is happy this time…
I should be happy too… Hyukjae took her hand to her chest.
“But why does it hurt so much?” She asked clenching her clothes into her chest and letting go some more tears down.
Will you be mine next time Kyuhyun?
Will you get marry before I even meet you again?
Hyukjae closed her eyes and slowly walked away, carrying on with her deep pain that was now killing her heart once again.
But I will wait for you Kyuhyun.
No matter what.
Hyukjae was resting her body in the tree; her eyes closed; she was tired even when she did nothing. She had something in her hand, she was holding it tightly, not wanting to let go. That key was her biggest treasure, the only thing that assured her that she wasn’t dreaming that it wasn’t a nightmare, that Kyuhyun actually loved her. It was just a simple key, nothing special, or maybe she still hasn’t found why it was so special aside from being her only way to keep on going with what she wanted to call life.
“This is the key of my heart.” Kyuhyun told her once. “Don’t lose her or you will lose me.” He said half joking half serious.
Hyukjae didn’t know why, but her heart was beating hard at that time. She liked to remember Kyuhyun’s voice, but it has been so much since she last heard it that she was afraid she wouldn’t remember it.
“I won’t ever lose this key then.” She had said with a bright smile.
Hyukjae opened her eyes and saw that key in her hand. “I haven’t lost you Kyuhyun.” She said with a bitter smile in her face. “Right?” She asked while a lonely tear was falling down her pale cheeks. “Right?” She asked again clenching into the object in her hand and letting her heart cry out.
Hyukjae placed the key in its place once again; she had it as a necklace because she wanted to have Kyuhyun’s love near her chest, the only proof that made her remember what a warm hug meant, what a love kiss was and the happiness she felt every time Kyuhyun was smiling at her.
Walking through the streets of that small town Hyukjae was looking at nowhere, she was just walking with her eyes glued to the infinite.
“You should just give up.” Hyukjae heard that voice again.
“You know I won’t ever give up.” She replied not even looking at the person that was walking now next to her.
“Your destiny is already written.” The voice said ironically. “Haven’t you understood that?”
“Go away Siwon.” Hyukjae said getting annoyed. “I won’t ever go to that place if that’s what you came for.”
“Well…” Siwon said as he placed his hands behind his head. “You should.” He said while looking at an old lady trying to control her grandson. “That way you would dodge all those proofs Hankyung is giving you.”
Hyukjae stopped her tracks and Siwon did as her. “Get out Siwon.” She ordered in a firm voice and finally meeting Siwon’s eyes. “I don’t want to see you again in my entire life.”
Siwon felt how his body was shivering just because Hyukjae saw him like that. He knew Hyukjae would get mad with that topic, but well, he had to do as he was told.
“The king is coming!” Someone yelled and everybody in the village automatically bowed placing their knees in the floor.
“Aren’t you bowing?” Siwon asked when Hyukjae didn’t have the same reaction than everybody else.
“Why would I?” Hyukjae asked back. “He’s not my king; nobody is.”
“Yah!” Siwon exclaimed when the king’s guards were getting near. “You will be punished if you don’t bow!” He panicked.
Hyukjae was supposed to stay healthy and perfect. “I don’t mind.” She said walking to the middle of the street, facing the king’s guards. Siwon followed her because he couldn’t force her even when he wanted to; he was just a spirit and he regretted not going there with his own body, he could have stopped Hyukjae from doing those kinds of things.
“Yah!” Someone yelled to Hyukjae while pulling her dress.
Hyukjae and Siwon froze when they heard that voice, it was someone who was already kneeling and was pulling Hyukjae down. She looked down and got lost at those perfect eyes that were looking at her concerned.
Kyuhyun.
“Get down or else you’ll have problems!” Kyuhyun exclaimed pulling Hyukjae down without much force, the latter was just so lost as to force her way back.
Do you know me Kyuhyun? She asked while her tears were falling again.
The king was passing by and Kyuhyun quickly placed his hand above Hyukjae’s to get it down. Hyukjae didn’t opposed and stayed there, frozen and looking directly at the ground.
When the king was gone, everybody stood up and Siwon could finally sigh in relief. “Thank you.” Hyukjae said while standing up; her eyes never leaving Kyuhyun’s.
“You have to be more careful next time.” Kyuhyun said smiling.
“I will.” Hyukjae said smiling weakly.
“Good.” Kyuhyun said still smiling and making Hyukjae’s heart break apart.
Are you happy Kyuhyun?
Why did you had to reborn away from me?
Will next time be different?
“I have to go.” Kyuhyun announced. “My kids are waiting for me.” He said and without waiting for Hyukjae’s answer, he just left waving his hand.
“Will you still wait for him?” Siwon asked when he saw Hyukjae’s tears. “Next time he might be married again.” He said pointing at the girl that was waiting for Kyuhyun. “He might not reborn as yours again.”
“Shut up Siwon.” Hyukjae said cleaning the tears away from her face. “He promised me he will be back to me.”
“How many times has he promised that?” Siwon asked.
“Every time he’s with me.” Hyukjae answered not daring to take her eyes away from Kyuhyun’s back. “You wouldn’t understand.”
“I do understand.” Siwon said flatly. “You both are cursed.” He said even when Hyukjae already knew that. “You will live forever while he will be reborn again and again.”
Hyukjae said nothing and just started to walk away, not minding Siwon. The latter just decided to leave Hyukjae alone, he in fact felt a little sad because of those lovers situation.
"I didn’t get to warn you about what’s going to happen in a few years Hyukjae.” Siwon said as his figure disappeared in the air.
It has been almost three years since Hyukjae last saw Kyuhyun in that small village. She has been taking care of him from afar; even when Kyuhyun isn’t with her in that life, she didn’t want the latter to suffer from anything.
Hyukjae hugged her legs while she was sitting in front of a huge and strange tree. She felt how her energy was draining little by little; she didn’t have a house to live; because Kyuhyun would be her home. She didn’t have friends, because she hated saying goodbye. Hyukjae hated being close with someone because she knew they would get old and die and she would remain young and alive.
“Four hundred fifty six.” She said to the nothing. “It has been four hundred fifty six years since I met you Kyuhyun.”
Hyukjae closed her eyes and took her hand to her chest, finding Kyuhyun’s key and clenching it hard.
“You have already lived ten times.” She said breathing deeply. “Aren’t you tired?”
It’s okay. She thought.
Because I know you still love me.
I know if I’m patient we will be together again.
Hyukjae felt alarmed when she felt a strange feeling in her chest. “Not now.” She prayed closing her eyes tightly. “He’s happy, not now!” She yelled and stood up as quickly as she could towards Kyuhyun’s house.
She arrived panting hard and cursing herself as the sharp pain in her heart grew bigger with every second.
Hyukjae ran even faster when she saw a figure lying in the floor; she knew the figure was having a problem, she didn’t know what was this time; she didn’t know if it was an accident or a natural disease; but she knew something wrong had happened this time as well.
No… Please… She pleaded as her legs ran faster and faster.
Hyukjae slowed down as the figure took a defined shape. She took her hands to her mouth to suppress her sobbing and her tears were full of tears.
Kyuhyun was dying; and it only meant Kyuhyun remembered his past lives; he remembered them by his own and Hankyung decided to just kill him. Kyuhyun was dying and even when Hyukjae had seen it so many times, she still couldn’t avoid the pain it felt when Kyuhyun looked at her like that.
“Kyuhyun…” She called as she kneeled in front of his body.
“Hyukkie…” Kyuhyun answered panting hard and smiling warmly. “I’m sorry…” He said while taking his hand to Hyukjae’s already wet cheek.
“No Kyuhyun…” She said still crying. “You are happy now!”
“I was a fool for not being with you since the beginning Hyukkie.” Kyuhyun said as he coughed hardly.
Hyukjae took her hands to embrace Kyuhyun’s hand in her face. “I promise I will find you next time Kyuhyun.” She promised as she leaned down.
“I love you Hyukkie.” Kyuhyun said as he closed his eyes to kiss Hyukjae, their lips finally found their way and they both let some tears fall when they realized how much they had missed those lips, the feeling of finally being with the one they loved and being happy together.
“I love you too Kyuhyun.” Hyukjae said as they broke apart and their eyes glued together.
Kyuhyun smiled warmly, and Hyukjae smiled back. She knew what was coming and it hurt her. She remembered the first time Kyuhyun smiled at her; she remembered how strong her love for him was. She decided to never let go of that perfect love; she didn’t know how; and she didn’t know when; but she had to break the curse under them and finally be able to be together; to finally be able to love each other as the first time they did.
Stay with me foerever Kyuhyun.
I need you just to breath.
I'm not leaving this life without you.
Kyuhyun rubbed Hyukjae's cheek as his energy was drained away. "I love you." He said and closed his eyes smiling.
Hyukjae cried the whole day, embracing Kyuhyun's dead body, cursing her life, wishing Kyuhyun would never born again so he won't suffer anymore.
But it was impossible, Hyukjae knew it; and it hurt her heart like a knife.
